Column charts and bar charts are very similar – in fact, people often use the term ‘bar chart’ to mean what we call a ‘column chart’. Both chart types use rectangular bars to display data values, but the key difference is the orientation. Bar charts usually display the data with a horizontal bar whereas column charts use vertical bars.
It depends on the situation. Both column and bar charts are suitable for comparing the magnitude of different values. Often, the choice of whether to use a bar or column chart comes down to which version fits the data better. Some data can be more intuitive to read in a column format. For example, if you are comparing how values change over time then a column chart might be a good choice. However, data categories with long titles might be better placed on a bar chart where the horizontal orientation allows more space for the title, making it easier to read. Bar charts can be good for displaying data that is sorted alphabetically, as it can be easier to look up a data point when reading down a list. Ultimately, the decision is yours. everviz allows you to switch between the different types and compare their appearance. You can also preview how the different options will be displayed on different screen sizes before you make your decision.
A column range chart is similar to a column chart except each column can start at a non-zero value. These visualizations are sometimes called ‘floating column charts’ and they are often used to display minimum and maximum values in a range. With everviz, there are many different options to create the exact column chart you are looking for. To create a column range chart, you should create a new project in the everviz dashboard and select ‘Column range’ under chart type. Then add your data ensuring it includes both a minimum and maximum value for each data point. You can upload a spreadsheet or paste the data directly into the everviz dashboard. Next, select the template that most suits your needs and check the preview to ensure that your data is displayed correctly in floating columns. If you need to make changes or customizations, select ‘Continue in Editor’ which allows you to change any element of your chart. If necessary, you can adjust the chart by assigning different columns to the minimum and maximum display values.
