The Boston Marathon is the oldest annual marathon in the world and ranks as one of the most prestigious road racing events in the world. This American classic, which has been funded by John Hancock Financial since 1986, continues to be run by the B.A.A. By virtue of its traditions, durability, and method of gaining entry into the race (via qualification), the Boston Marathon has distinguished itself as the pinnacle event in the sport of road racing.
The open division course records of men and women have improved a cumulative eight times since 1986 and the field size has risen from 4,904 entrants to 30,000 in recent years. Each year, the Boston Marathon also draws nearly 500,000 spectators, making it the most commonly watched sporting event in New England.
