See how Pulse Labs enhances data storytelling with everviz. This case study highlights theming’s role in creating engaging, branded visualizations.
“Before we discovered everviz, we were drastically limited in our ability to produce cohesively branded data visualizations.”
— Tara Connelly, Senior Product Designer at Pulse Labs
About Pulse Labs
Since its start in 2017, Pulse Labs has been at the forefront of revolutionizing user experience research and analytics. Its proprietary technology captures real-time, context-rich user interactions in a privacy-conscious manner. Pulse Labs conducts research and data capture projects in 10+ countries and across multiple languages, allowing customers to understand and improve user experiences across the globe.
Pulse Labs originally started using everviz to create compelling data stories for its company blog, Pulse Labs IQTM. Once realizing how easy and effective it was to use everviz, the Pulse InsightStudioTM team started to incorporate everviz into their workflows as well.
The challenge
What challenges were you facing prior to using interactive data visualizations?
We were looking for a way to visualize data within articles on our company blog, Pulse Labs IQ. Previously we had used free charts visualization options through Google Sheets, but realized that the visual quality of those graphics were not as customizable or as elevated as we needed. We were looking for a more professional alternative that was intuitive, customizable, and fit our branding requirements.
How do you use data visualizations?
We use everviz to visualize the research findings within articles on our Pulse Labs IQ blog.
When do you consider a data visualization a success?
Data visualization is a success when it simplifies data, is intuitive to understand, and tells a compelling story.
The solution
Why everviz?
During our research of data visualization solutions, everviz was the only option we came across that allowed us to apply the nuanced level of branding we required, especially with regards to typography. We also appreciate how intuitive the user interface is and the variety of templates it contains, enabling us to diversify how we display our data and findings continuously.
We were also excited by the API capabilities, as we are working on introducing everviz visualizations into our user research product, Pulse InsightStudio, as well.
How do you handle chart branding?
We rely mostly on the company theme and duplicating of previous projects. We have yet to build out specific themes for each chart type, but this is something we’re happy is available and we’re interested to explore this functionality more.
How was the experience creating accessible data visualizations?
We’re especially impressed by the customizability of the tool-tips, which is one of our favorite everviz features, as they truly add another layer to each data story. In this example, we used the tool-tips to tell the the data story in a conversational way:
Finding the Right AI for the Job
The results
What have been the results?
everviz’s data visualizations are integrated into almost every blog post we release within our Pulse Labs IQ publication. We’ve found interesting ways to visualize survey data, as well as to analyze trends in open ended responses.
Survey data:
(We used a stacked bar chart to accommodate for the split between ESPN’s services)
Gameday Strategy: NFL Fans Optimize Viewing Experiences and Budgets
Open ended:
AI, Human Centered Design, and a New Creative Process
We also teamed up with automotive experts SBD Automotive to publish a joint report on AI trends in the auto industry, leveraging our research and visualizations.
The AI Future of Automotive: Consumers and the Conversational Car
Has the goal been achieved?
Definitely! We love the feature set available with everviz and are still looking for additional ways to incorporate it into our products and interfaces.
How have people reacted?
We’ve seen an uptick in time on site for our blog articles since integrating everviz data visualizations into our format. They break up the content and make understanding data easier than ever before. We’ve even had other teams within our organization reach out to learn how to use everviz for their own projects and initiatives.
What tips do you have for other chart designers?
Think outside the box, or should we say, bar chart! While some data stories are best suited for more traditional visualizations, we love exploring everviz’s different chart types in order to tell stories in a uniquely compelling way. Here’s an example of how we used an icon chart to visually represent the distribution of different topics.
