We’ve just launched support for land-only boundaries in everviz maps. This new feature improves how regions and countries are displayed by trimming away ocean and lake areas that are often included in default boundary data.
Example: With and without Land-Only Boundaries
Let’s take Iceland as an example. The standard administrative boundary for the country includes a large surrounding area of the North Atlantic Ocean.
Before the change
Boundaries for countries like Iceland included large surrounding ocean areas.

After the change
In many cases, especially when focusing on land-based data, including ocean or lake areas isn’t helpful. That’s why we’ve added support for land-only polygons, which trim away the water and show only the landmass.

This results in a tighter, more accurate shape that works better for many types of data visualizations. This improvement is especially helpful for visual storytelling, static image exports, and any project where geographic clarity matters.
Explore the difference using the everviz slider below.
What are land-only polygons?
OpenStreetMap not only includes administrative boundaries but also coastline data. Using this, we now generate an alternative version of each boundary that excludes water areas. These land-only polygons closely follow coastlines and remove extended ocean or lake areas from the boundary shape.
The result is:
- 🌍 Cleaner, land-focused maps
- 🖼️ Improved visuals for exports and print
- 📊 More accurate context for land-based metrics like population or infrastructure
How to use it
It’s simple. When creating or editing a map in everviz, search for a region to fill or right click anywhere in the map to choose
