Context

For the 2024 Canton election in October in Valais, Switzerland, Canal9 used everviz’s interactive election graphics to visualize and distribute voting results across various platforms. In this post, Canal9 CTO Stephané Sassano provides insight into how everviz helped overcome the challenges they faced visualizing voting results.

Voting resultls were visualized with HTML-based everviz graphics during live TV coverage of the election.

The Challenge: Simplifying a Tedious Process

What challenges were you facing prior to using everviz election graphics?

Elections in Valais are decentralized, with 122 municipalities each running their own elections. Before using everviz, Canal9 faced the challenge of manually processing and formatting election data from each municipality. The lack of centralization meant that every result had to be entered and formatted manually—a process that was both time-consuming and tedious. Once the data was ready, Canal9 had to create separate versions of the graphics for distribution across TV, web, and social media platforms.

How were election graphics created before everviz?

In the past, most election graphics were created using PowerPoint or Infogram. Although these tools helped create visuals, exporting and formatting the graphics for multiple platforms added another layer of complexity.

What defines a successful election graphic for Canal9?

For Canal9, an election graphic is successful when the results are easily readable and simple to implement. Their goal is to ensure that voters can quickly find the results relevant to their municipalities.

The control room at Canal9 is the nerve center of live election coverage. Here, operators used various programs, including everviz and DiNA, to run the show.

💡The Solution: Why Canal9 Chose everviz

Canal9 was looking for a centralized, user-friendly solution that would integrate smoothly with our existing newsroom control system, DiNA. everviz fit the bill, offering easy-to-use, interactive charts and maps that made the election graphics process much more efficient.

Canal9 journalists used the everviz panel in Dina to easily add election graphics to their online articles.

“What used to be a cumbersome, manual process became streamlined and efficient with everviz.”

How did Canal9 handle graphics creation with everviz?

The process began by outlining the various types of graphics that would be useful for the election. In such a regionally-specific election, clear communication was crucial to ensure that everyone involved understood the particular needs and challenges of visualizing the results.

How was the experience of creating visualizations for different platforms?

With everviz, the process was simple and intuitive. The platform allowed us to quickly adapt graphics for TV, web, and social media, significantly reducing the time needed to distribute election results to the different platforms.

A Canal9 operator inserts everviz election graphics into the live TV stream using Flowics from Vizrt, which, like everviz, is HTML-based.

The Results: Seamless Distribution Across Platforms

Did everviz meet expectations?

Yes, everviz fully met our expectations. The team was able to create and distribute election graphics across all platforms effortlessly. What used to be a cumbersome, manual process became streamlined and efficient with everviz.

Has Canal9 achieved their goal?

For a first experience, Canal9 is very satisfied with the results. This project marks a significant improvement in how we handle election graphics, and it opens the door to even more complex visualizations in future elections.

The Canal9 website posted election results for each of the 122 municipalities in Valais.
