At everviz, we’re always looking for ways to help you tell more compelling stories with data. Today, we’re excited to announce that everviz maps now supports animated SVG markers, a powerful new way to make your most important map points impossible to miss.
Why animated markers?
Static maps are great for showing where things are. But when you’re covering breaking news, tracking a live event, or highlighting a crisis unfolding in real time, a static pin on a map just doesn’t convey the urgency your story deserves.
Animated markers change that. A pulsating circle signals that something is happening right now. A radar ring expanding from a location pin draws the eye immediately. A bouncing alert tells readers this isn’t just a data point. It’s a live situation.
Examples
We’ve designed a set of newsworthy animated marker icons built specifically for map storytelling:
- Pulsating circle: ideal for breaking news and live events
- Radar pin: a pin with expanding ground rings, perfect for tracking situations
- Alert triangle: flashing and shaking for urgent warnings
- Signal tower: for live broadcasts, press locations, or media events
- Bouncing pin: draws attention to a key story location
All markers are designed to work seamlessly alongside your existing everviz map embeds or map videos.
Here’s an example of how the pulsating circle looks in action, plotted across all 40 currently erupting volcanoes worldwide.
Built on open standards
Every marker is a self-contained animated SVG file with no JavaScript dependencies and no external libraries. They work anywhere a standard image can be used, load instantly, and scale perfectly at any size. The animations are driven entirely by CSS @keyframes, following the same technical standard as the rest of the everviz icon library.
How to use them
Download the pack below and upload any marker directly to your everviz map as a custom marker image. Set the size, position it on your map, and you’re done. The animation runs automatically.
The pack includes each icon in two colours: editorial red (#BC094A) and deep navy (#28277E). If you need a different colour to match your publication’s brand, the SVG files are easy to edit. All you need to do is find and replace the hex colour value in any text editor.
